Explaining Investment Strategy
Leadership of the investment unit for our Client, a financial services company, wanted to improve the quality of the presentations of their portfolio managers. While the managers were generally adept at picking stocks, there was room for improvement in the way they explained their investment strategies to key audiences, including the company CEO. Using The Message Track process, we worked with the individual portfolio managers to help them organize their strategies into compelling presentations.
- We began the process with one of our own presentations, this one to the group of managers, so they understood the scope of our assignment, its goal and what to expect.
- Following this initial meeting and over the next five weeks, we divided the process into five one-hour individual sessions: 1) core message development; 2) getting used to saying the message aloud; 3) focusing on delivery style; 4) improving the presentation document; 5) completing a dress rehearsal (in time for a fund status report to the company's investment committee, which included the CEO).
- In all, six portfolio managers were tapped for training.
- This process was repeated over several years.
